On 7th July 2024, Gully Classes Foundation, in collaboration with Waghoba Habitat Foundation, organized a transformative tree plantation drive in the lush Aarey Forest, Mumbai. Supported by the NSS Unit of Ramniranjan Jhunjhunwala College, this initiative united over 50 volunteers, including a diverse group of international participants from seven countries. Among the local contributors were Hakim Ansari, Mira Sayyed, Arslan Shaikh, Mohsin Ansari, Sana Ansari, Samira Lohar, Revati, Taslim Shaikh, and Abdul Munaf, the Founder & Director of Gully Classes Foundation.
Aarey Forest: A Vital Ecosystem Under Threat
Known as Mumbai’s “green lungs,” Aarey Forest plays a crucial role in maintaining the city’s ecological balance. This tree plantation drive aimed not only to restore biodiversity but also to mitigate the adverse effects of urbanization.
The initiative had a dual focus. Beyond environmental conservation, it sought to economically empower Gita Bhatre, a local woman farmer. The planted trees, once mature, will bear fruit, offering her family a sustainable income source. This blend of ecological restoration and community upliftment exemplifies how targeted initiatives can address interconnected challenges.

The event was a celebration of unity, with local volunteers working alongside international participants such as Sumaiya and Hasan from Turkey, Eric, Emma, and Ken from Vietnam, Trang and Phoebe from Vietnam, and Serge from England. Together, they showcased a shared commitment to environmental and social change.
Local youth, including dedicated Gully Classes Foundation volunteers, played a pivotal role in ensuring the drive’s success. Their collective effort highlights the power of community-driven action.
A Multi-Dimensional Impact
This tree plantation drive achieved:
Environmental Gains: Enhancing biodiversity, combating climate change, and strengthening the Aarey ecosystem.
Economic Empowerment: Providing Gita Bhatre with a sustainable source of income, illustrating the intersection of environmental action and social welfare.
At Gully Classes Foundation, we believe in addressing complex challenges through integrated solutions that benefit both people and the planet.
Building a Sustainable Future
This event is part of Gully Classes Foundation’s larger vision of sustainable community development. Through initiatives like these, we empower underprivileged communities, especially women, by equipping them with the tools and platforms to achieve economic independence.
For Gita Bhatre, this effort signifies hope and resilience, proving that environmental conservation can be a catalyst for social progress.
